Electrical Safety Tips for Kids and Their Parents

Kids are curious, and sometimes it can be tricky to keep them away from potential hazards. In our homes, electricity can be one of the biggest hazards around. So today we wanted to share our best tips to keep your kids safe and ideas to help ensure your home is curious-kid-friendly and secure for everyone.

Important lessons to share with kids:

  • Always ask a grown up for help when you need to use something that uses electricity.

  • Don't plug multiples cords into one outlet or an extension cord – doing so risks damage to the electrical system and could potential cause a fire.

  • Always unplug cords by gripping the plug fixture - do not yank the cord out of the wall as this could cause damage to the appliance, the plug, or the outlet.

  • Always keep electrical items far away from water (a particularly important reminder for older kids in the age of Bluetooth speakers, laptops, iPhones, and iPads.)

  • Never use or insert metal objects into a toaster.

  • Stay at least the length of a school bus (10m) away from broken or fallen power lines.

  • Never climb on power poles or electrical boxes, be aware and fly kites away from power lines, and always look up for power lines when climbing trees.

Should you need a hand moving or fixing any electrical outlets, lights, fixtures, or appliances, please dont hesitate to give us a shout.
